Evolutionary Psychology is a practice of natural and social sciences that seeks to explain and predict human behavior from a functional and evolutionary perspective. Rooted in Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection and sexual selection, modern Evolutionary Psychology provides an integrated approach that examines psychological structure and mental processes.
Why do people express aggression and commit violent acts? What are the male and female preferences when looking for a suitable mate and why are they so different? Between “Nature” and “Nurture”, which one is more important in shaping an individual’s characteristics and mentality? How does parental involvement affect an offspring’s chance of survival and reproduction? Evolutionary Psychology attempts to answer these questions and help us understand why we are as we are and behave the way as we do.
We will discuss in this course a variety of topics such as parental investment, altruism, sexual selection, aggression and etc. In addition, we will also address the questions and controversial issues critics have raised from multiple perspectives.
